TAG Heuer – Brand History

Founded by Edouard Heuer in St. Imier, Switzerland in 1860, TAG Heuer is a recognised innovator in watchmaking history and is renowned as one of the most prestigious brands in the watch industry today.

Having initially focused on pocket watches and clockmaking at the brand’s conception, TAG Heuer introduced its innovative first chronograph in 1887. The chronograph had a built-in stopwatch function which, at the time, was a major breakthrough in watchmaking and helped to establish TAG Heuer as a leading brand.

TAG Heuer continued to hone its chronograph designs and introduce ground-breaking new features throughout the early 20th century. In particular, the mikrograph, a stopwatch device capable of measuring time to one-hundredth of a second, was introduced in 1916.

The late 20th century saw a number of further designs and inventions from TAG Heuer which set the brand in history as exceptionally innovative and luxury watchmakers. Most notably, Heuer introduced the Carrera, a chronograph designed for racing, in 1962, which soon developed a status as a coveted and iconic watch in the motorsport world.

From launching the Aquaracer dive watch, a highly legible, reliable line offering a 300-metre depth rating, in 2004, to introducing the first Swiss luxury smartwatch, the Connected watch, in 2015, TAG Heuer has continued to revolutionise the watch industry in the 21st century by leveraging its rich history and continuing to develop leading-edge technologies.
