In 1902 Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis founded a watch company. They used Hermann Aegler’s movements and placed them in high quality watch cases. These timepieces were sold to jewellers and marked as W&D. However, Hans has a dream to create a wrist watch. The brand Rolex was registered in 1908 with the names coming to Hans on a coach ride. The names was chosen because it is easy to say is any language and the power of the brand is testament to this initial thought. In 1910 a Rolex watch was the first wrist timepiece to be given a certificate of chronometric performance. This essentially meant it was checked and ratified as an exceptional time keeper.
From then on the brand become synonymous with accuracy and quality. In 1914 a Rolex watch was awarded a Class A precision certificate from the Kew Observatory which was normally reserved for Marine Chronometers. The exceptional level of time keeping and engineering quality is still at the heart of every Rolex watch today and has been one of the key pillars on which the globally recognised brand is built.
It was in 1926, just 21 years after Wilsdorf began making watches that the Oyster case was born. This was a revolution in watch design bringing a truly water proof case for watch users. But not only did it do what it was designed to do, it did it with style. The fluted bezel and caseback allowed the watch to be hermetically sealed but at the same time because a design icon for it’s aesthetics.
Rolex watches are generally manual or automatic winding but the brand did produce some Quartz watches too. One of the key themes that run through any Rolex movement is reliability and their robust nature. While design is at the brands heart Rolex movements are also able to deal with the rigours of use and remain accurate.
High quality components, lubricants and precision engineering make Rolex movements one of the best in the world and one of the many reasons they are so sought after on the pre-owned market.
