Cartier – Brand History
Founded by Louis-François Cartier in Paris, France in 1847, Cartier’s renowned luxury status and incredible watch designs are deeply ingrained in the brand’s rich heritage and ground-breaking innovation.
In the early days, Cartier was initially known for its high quality and intricately designed jewellery. This changed in 1888 when the business was taken over by Alfred Cartier, Louis-François’ son, who soon began experimenting with new watchmaking techniques. In 1904, this experimentation culminated in the Santos watch, one of the first wristwatches to be worn by men. The design is based on the concept of form, a taste for minimalism, the precision of proportions, and an eye for detail.
The 1900s saw Cartier release a number of other stunning timepieces. Notably, one of Cartier’s first uses of the panther motif appeared on a striking wristwatch of diamonds and onyx in 1914. Cartier continued to push the boundaries of watchmaking design into the late 1900s, creating the Crash watch in 1967, a boldly designed wristwatch featuring a contorted oval case. It is still recognised today as one of the most original luxury watches ever made.

Cartier Movement
Cartier watches typically feature automatic winding, particularly in the Ballon Bleu and Panthère lines. However, some vintage and limited edition models do offer manual winding.
